The naming of a square in Madrid after Arturo Barea, the Spanish émigré writer and BBC broadcaster who lived on Lord Faringdon’s Buscot Park estate until his death in 1957, is to be followed by a major exhibition in Spain’s capital in December, which I am curating.

Not everything has gone badly in Spain
In times of national angst, such as that caused by the struggle for independence in Catalonia, the most serious crisis in Spain since the attempted coup in 1981 and which turned violent when people tried to vote in last Sunday’s unconstitutional referendum, it is easy to become despondent and fall prey to the false belief that everything is going wrong in the country.

Pasé los primeros seis años de mi vida (1951-1957) viviendo en un pueblo del condado de Oxford. Nunca imaginé que me encontraba tan cerca de tu hogar en Faringdon, aunque eso lo descubrí después. Falleciste en 1957 a los 60 años, tras 18 de exilio. ¡Ojalá hubieras tenido una vida más larga!
